I recently had the opportunity to review the Adventures in Odyssey 90 Devotions for Kids: Biblical Principles to Build Your Faith, published by Tyndale House Publishers.
I have to admit, when I heard Adventures in Odyssey, I jumped at the chance to review the product.
I didn’t grow up listening to Adventures in Odyssey, but I was introduced to these amazing radio dramas when I met my husband. I admit that even before we had kids, we listened to episodes on road trips and TV-free nights! Now that we have kids, they love to listen in the car, before bed, and during activities.
{If you’re unfamiliar with Adventures in Odyssey, find out more at Whit’s End. You can even listen to episodes for free!}
The book Adventures in Odyssey 90 Devotions for Kids: Biblical Principles to Build Your Faith didn’t disappoint me. I was actually surprised by how much I liked it!
The book is divided into 13 themes:
- Salvation
- Learning about Jesus
- Discipleship
- Prayer
- The Bible
- Exercising Faith
- Forgiveness
- Giving
- Witnessing
- Worship
- Going to Church
- Serving Others
- Overcoming Sin
The introduction to Adventures in Odyssey 90 Devotions for Kids is written by John Avery Whittaker (Whit) and talks about how to use these devotions. Just like the Whit we love on the radio drama, his tone and words in this introduction are inviting, like he’s putting a kind, guiding arm around you.
Each devotion in this book is just like that – friendly and caring – while teaching truths of the Bible and the faith.
The devotions are written in a conversational, friendly style and as you can see in the picture below, the length is very manageable.
In addition to the “meat” of the topic, every devotion has a short side bar from one of the characters, chronicling the characters thoughts, reactions, or life applications on the topic being discussed that day. I felt that this added to the “friendly” feel. Even though most kids will be reading through these devotions independently, the interactions with the characters makes it feel like you’re reading through with a friend.
Though familiar characters are used and episodes of Adventures in Odyssey are mentioned, the devotions are easy to understand and follow even if you’ve never listened to the series and are unfamiliar with the characters.
Adventures in Odyssey 90 Devotions for Kids is not a Bible study, though it is a great resource for children who are beginning to do devotions on their own, as it is engaging, concise, and covers many important Scriptural principles. I would recommend Adventures in Odyssey 90 Devotions for Kids for kids ages 8-12.
Question for You:
Do your kids have their own devotional time? What are your favorite resources for devotions for children?
