I’m behind — in everything.
Okay, maybe not everything, but these days, I’m behind in a lot of things.
I know I can’t do everything and I’m learning to let go of some things, but I still get overwhelmed at times, and it almost paralyzes me — so much so that when I find a pocket of time or when I’m given the rare gift of quiet, I don’t know what to do!
My to-do list stares me in the face, and I’m just not sure where to begin. To be quite honest, sometimes I feel so stuck that I give in to apathy and indulge in avoidance. You know, lose myself in an engaging story via book or television. Jumping into the drama of someone else’s life seems much easier than accepting the responsibility of my own. Avoidance = my arch-nemesis!
Can you relate?
Your responsibilities might look different than mine and our goals might not be the same, but busyness seems to plague us all. Our to-do list is constant and the demands don’t seem to slow down, and most of us at one time or another will wonder, “Where do I even begin?”
So what’s the answer? What is the spark we need to jolt us out of our apathy or paralysis?
I believe it is this: do the next thing.
When I get overwhelmed or wonder what to do next, I have to remind myself to simply “do the next thing.”
What I choose might not be the “best” thing, but it is something and doing something breaks the choke hold paralysis has on me.
Completing one task helps motivate me to tackle another and momentum begins to build. My head clears a bit, and I can better choose what to do next.
If you’re overwhelmed or stuck or apathetic, if you’re avoiding your responsibilities out of fear, or if you just don’t know where to begin — start somewhere. Just do the next thing.
Question for You:
What keeps you from doing the next thing?
