Recently I had to say no to something I really wanted to do. Making that decision reminded me of something I wrote over a year and a half ago. Here it is, edited from the archives.
Sometimes it takes faith to say, “No.”
We often think of it as being the other way around.
We reason that “walking by faith” means moving forward, saying, “Yes.”
Following a calling, even while afraid,
accepting that position when a move is imminent,
forgiving even while it hurts.
And all of those choices require faith.
Quiet confidence. Firm belief. Peace.
Trusting Him even when we’re afraid to move forward.
Faith for the “doing,” the “going,” the following.
But sometimes the “no’s” feel harder.
Turning down an offer,
a proposal,
an opportunity
when there are no others on the horizon or
when rejection threatens or
when we’re sure to let someone down.
Choosing to stay the course, even when a short cut lures.
Waiting in the desert though the land is parched.
Making the choice that doesn’t. make. sense.
Sometimes having faith to say “no” is really the trusting,
the “yes” to God’s plan,
God’s timing,
God’s will
… not mine.
By faith.
Sometimes it takes faith to say, “No.”
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1
Question for You:
Have you ever struggled with saying “No” — with having to hold fast in faith trusting that our Father has something better in store?
you nailed it here, erika. saying no gets easier with age, i can say from experience, but still requires faith that the better for me is there.
